Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ, 2050 Periwinkle Way, exhibits the work of fine artists with local ties throughout the year. Pastels by Suzanne G. Bennett will be on view and for sale in May and June.

While Bennett was growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, her family greatly encouraged her artistic endeavors. She went on to earn degrees from Rollins College and Parsons School of Design. For many years, she worked as a graphic designer in New York City and in suburban Monmouth County, N.J.

It was in 2005, while Bennett and her family were living in Monmouth County, that she began to study with noted pastelist Sangita Padke. Bennett and her husband moved to the Fort Myers area nine years ago. She is a regular plein air painter and paints with the San Cap Art League and the Lee County plein air painters. She has often exhibited in the galleries at BIG Arts, including in the 2018 “Passion for Pastels” exhibit in the Founders Gallery.

Bennett describes her work as loose and impressionistic. She has always lived by the sea; and beaches, waves, and reflections on water are frequently her subjects. She finds the brilliance and purity of pastels — those “chunks of pure pigment” — exhilarating.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of paintings benefits the church. The exhibit may be seen during office hours when Fellowship Hall is not otherwise being used and on Sundays between and after services. For more information, call the church office at 239-472-0497, or visit www.sanibelucc.org.
