Eva George contacted the Sanibel Recreation Center with an interest in training for the popular 10K Race 4 F.I.SH. - Sanibel’s only foot race dedicated to F.I.S.H. of SANCAP, a leading non-profit human services organization focused on neighbors helping neighbors.

Recreation Center Director Andrea Miller informed George there were not any training options available at the time. “We’ve been trying to give our community more opportunities to get fit for life,” said Miller. The two women recognized the demand for an organized run club on the island, so George decided to sign on as a volunteer with the City of Sanibel to head the run club’s pilot program.

The Sanibel Run Club meet at 8:30 a.m. every Friday at the Recreation Center and run towards Captiva Island or Tarpon Bay, taking advantage of Sanibel’s Shared-Use Path system. It’s first meeting was Sept. 7 and had nine runners in attendance. Anyone interested in training for the 10K Race 4 F.I.S.H. are encouraged to join.

Race day draws hundreds of runners from near and far as one of the few 10K’s in the area. Runners line up at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Sanibel Community House. The closed-circuit course includes a right turn within the first mile to Casa Ybel Road and a turn-around at Island Inn Road with a mile-and-a-half remaining.

Many solo runners and teams return each year for many reasons, but locals say it’s about community. To join the Sanibel Run Club, runners must be 18 years or older and those younger than 18 must have parental permission. Those with a child in a stroller are welcome. George says input on races for which to train are also welcome.

If there is group interest in training for a specific race, we will gladly add it to our schedule,” said George.
