The first thing a visitor to the Sanibel Shell Festival notices is the shells and the beauty of them, both in their native forms and in a wide variety of beautiful creations. The second thing the visitor notices is that everything at the Shell Festival is affordable.

Everything is priced to sell,” said Tyler Schoenherr with a wide grin Wednesday as setup went on for the Shell Festival that opens Thursday and runs through Saturday on the grounds of the Community House.

Schoenherr and his wife Sue are again Sanibel Community Association Shell co-chairs and they were busy on the grounds in beautiful weather Wednesday along with a host of other volunteers.

We're setting it up and things are coming along pretty good. We have great volunteers. It's one of the things that makes this event and Sanibel so special,” Tyler said.

This is the 79 th edition of the Shell Festival, which raises money for the SCA. The variety of shells and the creations from them are extraordinary again this year.

We want things to sell. If something sits here for three years, then it's not priced right,” Tyler said.

Then again, if it only sits there for 10 minutes, it's not priced right either he said, again with the big grin.

He said the local shell dealers and others involved in shells on the island are very supportive of the Shell Festival and do what they can to help the festival get the prices right.

The Shell Festival, which includes the Shell Show inside the Community House, is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 3-4, and 9-4 on Saturday, March 5.
