As Sanibel Public Library continues the next phase of “Your Library Reimagined” remodel project, parts of the Library are being renovated as the facility is open for normal operating hours.

Sanibel Public Library IT Manager Danny Hussey and Youth Librarian Deanna Evans demonstrated working with electrical circuits using bananas, watermelons, oranges, and other items as conductors. The circuits allow electrical flow. The food was connected to a computer, to be played like a musical instrument. Bananas become bongos, potatoes become pianos, and soon an entire band was formed.

The Makey Makey circuit demo is part of the Library's new Think Tank, supporting STEM initiatives and to encourage youth interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The Library is planning more Think Tank hands-on demonstrations in the coming months for children and adults.

The Think Tank is funded with a grant from Hans and Leslie Fleischner and the Sanibel Public Library Foundation; with new STEM-related gift books from the Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club.

On Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20 explore your creative STEM side from 1 to 4 p.m. with ROK Blocks. Young builders can create 3D construction models with the blocks. No registration required.

A “Kindergarten through 12th grade” Thanksgiving-themed food craft begins at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

There are no weekly youth events during the week of Nov.19, the weekly schedule resumes Nov. 27. Events are listed on the Library’s online calendar. The Library is closed Thursday, Nov. 22 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
