Couple will be signing copies of their books, Florida’s Living Beaches, Florida’s Seashells, and Our Sea Turtles from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Sanibel Community House.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club, sponsors of the annual Sanibel Shell Festival, is pleased to announce the presence of naturalists Blair and Dawn Witherington at this year’s show. The couple will be signing copies of their bestselling books, Florida’s Living Beaches: A Beachcomber’s Guide, Florida’s Seashells, and Our Sea Turtles at the Authors’ Table from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9. A portion of all sales will be donated to the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club, to provide grants for students interested in the study of malacology (mollusks), local sea life, and marine biology and ecology.

Florida natives with a passion for Florida’s beaches, shells, and sea life, Blair and Dawn Witherington have collaborated on many projects over the years, combining their knowledge, writing, photography, and design skills. This will be their first appearance at the Sanibel Shell Festival.

About the authors:
Blair is an in-demand lecturer and a research scientist with the Inwater Research Group, a conservation nonprofit, and the University of Florida. He has baccalaureate and master’s degrees in biology from the University of Central Florida and a doctorate in zoology from the University of Florida. In 35 years of research, he has contributed numerous scientific articles and book chapters on sea turtle biology and sandy beaches.

Dawn is a graphic design artist and scientific illustrator trained at the Art Institutes of Colorado and Fort Lauderdale. Her art and designs have been featured in natural history books, posters, exhibits, and a line of sea-themed greeting cards.

The Witheringtons, who are married, began their journey to seek, collect, catalog, photograph, identify, and research the diversity of Florida’s beaches in the late 1990s. And their quest has taken them from the Florida Panhandle south through the Keys and northward to the Georgia border. They have learned that beaches are places where beauty abounds, wonders are spontaneous, and footprints fill quickly.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club welcomes the Witheringtons to the Sanibel Shell Show and invites visitors to stop by and meet them on Saturday, March 9th, at the Sanibel Community House.
