The Sanibel Island Fishing Club will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the north room at Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way. Meetings begins at 6:30 p.m. with a half-hour social time and the featured speaker is at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge for the event and the angling public is cordially invited to attend. Pizza and refreshments are available at a nominal charge.

This month’s featured speaker is local offshore Captain Jim Branca, who runs a 32-foot Century powered by two 300 HP Yamahas. Branca is a licensed and insured USCG Charter Captain Fishing Guide and holds a Federal Reef and Pelagics Permit allowing him and his charters to go beyond the standard nine-nautical mile limit impacting most inshore guides.

As a result, Branca runs as far as 30 to 75 miles offshore where he concentrates on catching grouper, mangrove and American red snapper, porgies and a host of other offshore reef species.

Captain Branca has been fishing the offshore waters for decades and will discuss his choice of tackle, bait and the various techniques he uses to target different offshore species. While the inshore and near shore waters are still recovering from the harmful algae blooms of 2018, the offshore waters have remained unscathed.

Fishing aboard his boat, aptly named Tie 1 On! has never been better. Be sure to attend this meeting and learn from a pro. For more information about Captain Branca, go to www.tieoneoncharter.com or visit his home page on Facebook.

The Sanibel Island Fishing Club meets monthly through season and sponsors several group outings as well as lending support for various fishing related charities and organizations such as Captains for Clean Water, SCCF and the Sanibel Sea School.
