Columnist Roger Williams, with his son Nash, will be the guest speaker at the Democratic Club of the Islands meeting Jan. 17 at the Community House.
Florida Weekly Columnist Roger Williams will be the featured speaker Thursday, Jan. 17 at the regular meeting of the Democratic Club of the Islands. The meeting which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way.

Williams was born in Colorado, and majored in classics at the University of Kansas. He spent time in military service after college, taught Latin and English for a couple years, and worked as a PR writer for several colleges. He then enrolled at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, graduating in l993. He went to work at the Asbury Park Press, then later The News-Press in Ft. Myers, the New Times in Broward County, and then to Florida Weekly, where he’s served as the paper’s columnist and general assignment writer since its inception in 2007.

A Naples exhibit of l00 AP photos of WWII helped Williams focus his own writing and thinking about freedom of speech, the value and power of the First Amendment. Williams is married to News-Press writer Amy Bennett-Williams. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding journalistic strategies to impart information and how to be an active part of the process of imparting information.
