Progressive Club of the Islands is the name of the former Democratic Club of the Islands, after a majority of the Democratic Club members voted for the change at the Feb. 2l meeting. The purpose is to strengthen progressive ideals and principles, and to broaden the tent to include independents and progressive thinkers of every stripe.

It is the intent of the change to pull together diverse elements of our democratic society, to unify and support active interest in political and governmental affairs, to support our members in engaging in campaigns, and promoting environmental and social justice issues as they specifically impact our islands and surrounding communities. The PCI will continue to support Democratic candidates for office, as well as others who advocate progressive ideas and principles.

The Progressive Club of the Islands will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21 at the Sanibel Community House in the Founders Room. The meeting is free and open to the public. Nirupa Netram will be speaking on the plight of immigrants in our midst.
