Sanibel Police arrested an Ontario man for driving under the influence, after a witness observed him throwing a liquor bottle into a trash can then getting into his vehicle just before 6 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Surfrider Beach Club, 555 E. Gulf Dr.

The concerned witness called 911 and an officer on patrol observed the vehicle operated by 61-year-old Douglas Lakner traveling west on Periwinkle Way near Casa Ybel Road. The officer followed Lakner to the parking lot of Jerry’s Plaza, 1700 Periwinkle Way, observing his slower than usual right turns into the lot and parking space.

Lakner was exiting his vehicle when the officer noticed his deliberate movement and upon contact noticed his blood-shot eyes, slurred speech and the smell of alcohol on his breath. Lakner did not consent to a field sobriety test and was transported to the Lee County Jail, where his breath test result was .143. He was released from Lee County Jail Saturday, April 27, on a $1,000 bond.

Abel Peralta, 23, Fort Myers, was traveling on Sanibel Captiva Road at 11:59 a.m. Friday, April 26, when he stopped near mile-marker five for an alligator crossing the road and the back of his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Ashley Jasinski, 27, Fort Myers. No injuries were reported.

Yazhen Zhou, 54, city not provided, was attempting to park her vehicle at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Hahn-Pfeifer Center, 1630 Periwinkle Way, when her vehicle struck a parked vehicle registered to Constance Davidson, 58, Fort Myers.
