A Fort Myers man was arrested by Lee County deputies Monday, April 1, following a hit and run accident on Sanibel then attempting to flee the scene of a second accident just off the island.

Jose Marcos-Cardona, 21, was at Sanibel Arms West, 827 E. Gulf Dr., when an employee asked him to leave the property since he was not guest. Marcos-Cardona reportedly became irate with the employee before getting into his vehicle, revving its engine and backing it into a parked vehicle, which was occupied by an unidentified woman, then leaving the scene.

Sanibel Police was soon notified by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department that Marcos-Cardona had been located attempting to flee the scene of a second accident a few miles out of the city’s jurisdiction. Marcos-Cardona was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license, as well as the hit and run at Sanibel Arms West. He was released Tuesday, April 2, from Lee County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

Motorcycle Accident

Seventy-one-year-old Jefferson Paris, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was injured in a motorcycle accident at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at the intersection of Periwinkle Way and Lindgren Boulevard.

Paris was traveling west on Periwinkle Way when he began to slow for traffic and a vehicle operated by George Johnston, 72, Tamarac, Fla., “tapped” the rear wheel of Paris’ motorcycle causing him to accelerate and lose control of the motorcycle. Paris was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for a possible shoulder injury.

Bicycle Accidents

A couple and their dog were walking on the Shared Use Path along Casa Ybel Road, near Sabal Sands Road, at 7:39 p.m. Sunday, March 31, when two bicyclists came around the corner traveling at about 20 m.p.h.

Aaron Springhetti, 33, Madison, Ind., and Thomas O’Toole, 58, Sanibel, were riding their bicycles when they encountered the couple on the path and hit their brakes. O’Toole may have hit the front brake causing him to be thrown over the handlebars. He struck his forehead on the asphalt and possibly lost consciousness temporarily. He was air lifted to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injury.

William Dakos, 57, Sanibel, was riding his bicycle eastbound on Junonia Street at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, April 4, when a vehicle operated by David Witty, 74, Sanibel, attempted to make a right turn onto Nerita Street from Junonia and struck Dakos’ bicycle. Dakos was taken for treatment of his injuries.

Minor Accidents

Joseph Rainer, 73, was backing his vehicle out of parking space at Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 2304 Periwinkle Way, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, when his vehicle struck a parked vehicle owned by James Storer, 74, Estero, Fla.

A vehicle operated by Mary McArdle, 31, Chelsea, Ala., struck the back of a vehicle operated by Carly Underwood, 36, Cape Coral, at the intersection of Periwinkle Way and Causeway Boulevard at 11:16 p.m. Sunday, March 31. McArdle told police she thought Underwood’s vehicle had started moving and lifted her foot from the brake.

James McCoy, 78, Seymour, Ind., was traveling through the parking lot at Sanibel City Hall, 800 Dunlop Rd., at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, when he attempted to make a left turn, but stopped and backed his vehicle into a vehicle operated by Veronica Runge, 31, Estero, Fla.
