A Sanibel man lost control of his vehicle the night of Saturday, Nov. 24, while traveling west at a high-rate of speed in the area of 4249 Sanibel Captiva Rd. Driver Joshua Olson, 22, (left) was not injured in the crash, but failed a field sobriety test and charged with driving under the influence.

A witness told officers he observed Olson’s vehicle collide with a utility pole, travel across the east-bound lane before rolling over and coming to rest in the wooded area. Olson claimed he had left a local restaurant, where he had a few drinks, and was traveling to his residence in the 1400 block of Jamaica Drive when he lost control of his vehicle at the curve in the road.

Olson was booked into the Lee County Jail and charged with a DUI causing property damage and cited for careless driving. He was released Sunday, Nov. 25 on a $2,000 bond.

Young Driver Cited After Collision

Jeff Hayward, 70, North Hampton, Ma., was traveling west on Periwinkle Way at 2:59 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, when a vehicle operated by Austin Desiderio-Taub, 17, Sanibel, turned left from the east-bound turn lane onto Dixie Beach Boulevard and struck his vehicle.

Hayward’s vehicle then struck the front of a vehicle operated by Kevin Kimbrough, 49, Clearwater Beach, Fla., who was stopped on Dixie Beach. Hayward’s 70-year-old wife Madeline, a passenger, was transported to Health Park for treatment. No other injuries were reported. Desiderio-Taub was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

Parking Lot Crashes, Minor Collision

Benjamin Read, 32, Arlington, Va., was attempting to exit a parking spot at Jerry’s Plaza, 1700 Periwinkle Way, at 10:02 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, when his vehicle collided with a vehicle operated by Jacob May, 18, Fort Mill, S.C., who traveling west through the parking lot. No injuries were reported.

Allana Nagy, 21, Orlando, was attempting to turn her vehicle around in the parking lot at 2323 Wooster Ln. at 6:03 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, when her vehicle struck a parked vehicle registered to Alan Rembos, 59, Bonita Springs.

Brittany Foster, 23, Roanoke, Va., was traveling east on Periwinkle Way at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, when she braked to make a left turn into the Bailey Homestead Preserve and the back of her vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Russell Town, 54, Fort Myers.
