A vehicle operated by 26-year-old Salina Lopez, Clewiston, Fla., was exiting the parking lot of Sanibel Fresh, 1020 Periwinkle Way, at 7:38 p.m. Saturday, May 4, when her vehicle struck a westbound vehicle operated by Stephen Weiss, 71, Lyndhurst, Ohio.

Sanibel Police located Lopez, her passengers and vehicle behind the Sanibel Service Station, 1015 Periwinkle Way. Officers smelled the odor of marijuana as they approached the vehicle and a search of it turned up a glass jar previously containing marijuana and remnants of the drug on the floor. Lopez was cited for failing to yield the right of way in the accident with Weiss’ vehicle then allowed to leave the scene.

After Lopez left, officers found an orange pill bottle containing a one-inch marijuana blunt in the bushes near where she and her passengers had been standing. Fifteen minutes later, Lopez and a juvenile passenger returned to the scene and officers observed them recover two pieces of paraphernalia from the bushes.

Lopez claimed all the items belonged to her and she hid them for fear of getting into trouble. No charges were filed for the marijuana due to the “minuscule” amount. Officers confiscated the blunt and paraphernalia for destruction.

Gary Daugherty, 68, Burbank, Ohio, was cited for careless driving after he backed his vehicle into the stopped vehicle operated by John Porentas, 71, Fort Myers, at 9:32 a.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Sanibel Public Library parking lot, 770 Dunlop Rd. Daugherty told officers a parking attendant instructed him to back up, but the attendant denied that and instead attempted to warn Daugherty of the vehicle behind him.
