The recent Go F.I.S.H. fundraising event highlighted the needs of our community members and provided giving opportunities for critical programs. F.I.S.H. experienced a 46 percent increase in individuals served from 2017 to 2018 – answering a total of 18,713 requests for 5,786 individuals last year.
The Food Pantry was visited 7,845 times and provided 206,278 pounds of food. Volunteers, who provided 7,065 hours of service, delivered 3,273 meals to neighbors and drove nearly 34,000 miles last year. Several youth received food backpacks for weekend meals and 64 educational or camp scholarships were awarded to youth.
Those are just a few compelling outcomes of the work done by F.I.S.H. to help our neighbors in a single year.
“The generosity of our community is humbling,” said F.I.S.H. President and CEO Maggi Feiner about the success of Go F.I.S.H. “Every dollar raised supports the programs and services of FISH, which benefits our community as a whole.”
Guests of the 6th annual Go F.I.S.H. were able to see each of the programs and the direct impact their donation would make on community members of all ages. Professional auctioneer Tommy Williams merrily raised funds with many wonderful auction items ranging from diamond stacking bangles to a shark-tagging experience with Elliot Sudal and a Rolling Stones package that included two concert tickets and memorabilia.
“I cannot find the words to express the deep appreciation I feel toward each and every person, business and organization which contributed, from our volunteers, who worked so hard, to our sponsors, staff, board, and the Sanibel and Captiva communities,” said Feiner.
The Go F.I.S.H. theme was “Old Hollywood Glamour” and featured performances by look-alike celebrities Rose Dakos as Lauren Becall and Debi Almeida as Marilyn Monroe. Joey Almeida, as Sean Connery, stepped in for photos. Emcee Eric Pfeifer and F.I.S.H. Board Chair Nicole McHale also entertained guests.
“What a wonderful evening,” said Honorary Event Chairs Patty and Jim Sprankle. “We are always amazed by the generous hearts of our island neighbors.”
