City Announces Plenty of Fourth of July Activities

SC Staff Report

The City of Sanibel announced plenty of special events that have been permitted for Fourth of July, on Thursday this year. A pancake breakfast begins at 7 a.m. at the Sanibel Community Church, 1740 Periwinkle Way. It’s all-you-can-eat until 9 a.m. in the fellowship hall. There is no charge for the breakfast, but donations will benefit the Boy Scout Troop No. 1740.

Anyone attending the pancake breakfast is invited to stay for the parade, which begins at 9:30 a.m. The parade route begins at Island Inn Road to Tarpon Bay Road and down Periwinkle Way to Casa Ybel Road. Its theme is “Seas the Day” and Captains for Clean Water will Marshall the parade.

The city advised certain roads will be closed from 9 to 11 a.m. due to the parade.

  • Tarpon Bay Road between West Gulf Drive and Periwinkle Way
  • Periwinkle Way between Casa Ybel and Tarpon Bay roads
  • Portions of Dunlop Road and Palm Ridge Road

The longest running Fourth of July event, Sanibel Captiva Optimist Club’s Road Rally, will be from noon to 3 p.m. starting at Timbers Restaurant, 703 Tarpon Bay Road. Teams safely search the islands with clues on a prescribed driving course. All proceeds from the rally provide funds for the local Sanibel-Captiva Optimist Club’s 6 college scholarships and other programs for local youth.

Jerry’s Foods, 1700 Periwinkle Way, will hold its annual celebration following the parade until 2:30 p.m. There will be a water slide, dunk tank, bounce house, slip-n-slide, food and refreshments. No admission fee. A Fourth of July Barbeque will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club, 949 Sand Castle Rd. Admission fee required.

A fireworks display, sponsored by the city, will begin booming at 9 p.m., weather permitting. Fireworks will be launched from the north end terminus of Bailey Road. The city advises best viewing is from the Sanibel Causeway Islands or the bayside of Sanibel, but to use caution when parking — roadside or illegal parking is not permitted.
