SUMMARY:LWV of Sanibel Luncheon: Immigration Realities
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of Sanibel will host a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday\, Jan. 21\, at the Sundial Resort\, 1451 Middle Gulf Dr. The realities of immigration and immigrants in the United States under the current administration will be discussed. \nThe discussion will focus on the policy and impacts being seen in Florida\, and what legal avenues of immigration to the country are still open\, and how these changes can impact our state economy and trends looking forward. \nLWV of Sanibel welcomes back Indera DeMine\, Esq. of DeMine Immigration Law Firm. She is widely respected for her expertise in investor visas\, intracompany transfers\, visas for Canadian professionals\, employment-based immigrant petitions\, family immigration\, waivers\, and humanitarian forms of relief. \nIn addition to her business and employment-based practices\, her firm provides comprehensive removal defense representation\, advocating for clients in Immigration Court proceedings and before the Board of Immigration Appeals. \nHer mission is to educate\, empower\, and advocate for immigrant families\, local businesses\, and the broader community through accurate information and dedicated legal representation. \nThe program costs $35 per person and includes lunch. This year\, to honor our young working fellow Sanibelians\, we are happy to offer lunch for $10 a person for those under 40. \nPayment by cash or check can be made at the door. Seats are limited to the first 100 to register. Registration must be completed by January 16. To register\, click here or email lwvsanibel@gmail.com. \nFor more information\, contact Cathie Kozik\, President\, Sanibel League of Women Voters\, at cekozik@gmail.com or 224-659-2239. \nThe League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our systems of government and to influence public policy through citizen education and advocacy. The League’s enduring vitality and resonance come from its unique decentralized structure. The League is a grassroots organization working at the national\, state\, and local levels. \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Property Tax Debate: Pros and Cons
DESCRIPTION:Vice Mayor Holly Smith\nOn Sunday\, January 18\, the Committee of the Islands (COTI) will host a presentation by Holly Smith\, President of the Florida League of Cities and Vice Mayor of the City of Sanibel\, examining efforts by the Governor and the State Legislature to reduce or eliminate local property taxes. \nThe COTI Conversation will be at 4:00 pm at the Sanibel Community House\, 2176 Periwinkle Way\, Sanibel. \nAlthough the event is free\, both COTI members and nonmembers are welcome to attend; registration is required. To register for the event\, visit https://bit.ly/492Tjac. \nThe program will examine the benefits and drawbacks of current proposals\, exploring whether or not they will really reduce the tax burden for Floridians and whether proposed changes will help or hurt local communities. \nIt is critical that every property owner fully understands the risks and advantages of this proposal. Property taxes fund key local services—law enforcement\, waste collection\, road repair\, emergency response\, recreation\, and more. Unlike other types of revenue\, property tax revenue stays in the community where it is raised. Under the current system\, residents have a strong voice in how dollars are spent. Shifting to a system where funding is controlled by the State risks undermining home rule and invites decisions that could underfund local key services and fail to respond to local priorities. \nIs this proposed change much-needed relief for the taxpayer or a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” designed to consolidate power at the state level away from local communities? Come and learn more to form your own opinion! SUMMARY:Any Mauck Performance at American Legion
DESCRIPTION:Andy Mauck has been the lead singer and rhythm guitar player for The Lightfoot Band since January 2024. They are the original band of the late\, great Gordon Lightfoot\, and they are committed to keeping his iconic and timeless songs alive onstage. \nA rarity in the music biz\, Lightfoot toured the world and recorded with these same musicians for most of his six decade career. For the most part\, these are the same guys who created “The Lightfoot Sound.” That’s why Lightfoot’s concerts were known for their precise arrangements\, true to the original records\, and why The Lightfoot Band can continue to present the Songs of Gordon Lightfoot as they were originally written and recorded. \nAndy has been a close personal friend of Gordon and the band for nearly 50 years and therefore knows the material well\, so it was only natural that when they decided to continue performing the music live\, they called him. The Lightfoot Band performed 26 concerts in 2024 and is looking forward to many more in 2025. \nIn his solo shows\, Andy plays songs from a variety of artists\, including John Prine\, Kenny Chesney\, Jimmy Buffett\, Kenny Rogers\, Kris Kristofferson\, and more. Of course\, you’ll also hear the Lightfoot songs\, from the hits to the lesser-known gems\, along with stories about Lightfoot’s life and times and how the songs were written and recorded. \nHe will perform at the Tiki Hut of the American Legion Post 123 on Sanibel. Donations will be accepted for the Legion’s restoration efforts after Hurricanes Ian\, Helen and Milton caused damage to the building. \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:When the Soul Sings The Spirit Soars
DESCRIPTION:The Interfaith Outreach of SanCap invites the community to its 2025 Shared Scholar Program\, a free musical lecture “When The Soul Sings\, The Spirit Soars” by Florida Gulf Coast University Music Department Leader Dr. Thomas Cimarusti. A catered reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres\, beverages and desserts will be held in the SCUCC’s Fellowship Hall following Dr. Cimarusti’s musical lecture. \nDr. Cimarusti is a Professor of Music History and Music Degree Program Leader at Florida Gulf Coast University\, with a vast array of musical research interests. He has presented his research at conferences in Europe\, Asia\, and across the U.S. Dr. Cimarusti is also an avid accordion player and has performed with the Tallahassee Symphony\, the Naples Philharmonic\, and for university events. In 2018 he founded the Center for Public Musicology (CPM)\, an institution that promotes community engagement through private and public lectures\, opera excursions\, and ensemble instruction. \n“At this special musical lecture\, Dr. Cimarusti will focus on the Judaic origins of Christian worship music\,” said Dr. Sheila Sklar\, the chairperson of this year’s Shared Scholar Program. Dr. Sklar said she expects “all who attend will come away with a genuine feeling that when the soul sings\, the spirit truly soars!” \nThis event is made possible by the Leo Rosner Foundation and by an interfaith coalition of congregations on Sanibel and Captiva\, including Bat Yam Temple of the Islands\, Captiva Chapel by the Sea\, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church\, and Sanibel Congregational UCC. The event will also benefit F.I.S.H.\, which asks that attendees please bring canned good or non-perishable items for donation\, and which will be holding a 50/50 Raffle for all attendees. \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Audubon: Kites and Kestrels
DESCRIPTION:The Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society is excited to announce their third\, and last\, lecture of the year: The conservation biology of two famously Floridian raptors: Swallow-tailed Kites and Southeastern American Kestrels from Dr. Ken Meyer of the Avian Research Conservation Institute. Dr. Meyer will provide history and updates for the long-term studies by Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI) on two raptor species that share a common dependance on Florida’s distinctive native plant and animal biodiversity: the Swallow-tailed Kite\, a long-distance neotropical migrant; and the Southeastern American Kestrel\, a non-migratory genetically distinct subspecies. Dr. Meyer’s presentation highlights the importance of native insect species\, and the communities that support these species\, to the survival and successful reproduction of these charismatic and threatened birds of prey. He also will tell us about ARCI’s strategies for turning careful\, timely research into well-crafted management practices that can – and should – be delivered by federal and state natural resource agencies\, public conservation and citizen-science organizations\, timber companies\, and private land owners and managers. \nDr. Meyer\, who received his B.S. in Zoology from the University of Maine and his Ph.D in Zoology/Behavioral Ecology from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill)\, has studied the conservation biology of birds in Florida and beyond since the 1980’s\, beginning with his research on Swallow-tailed Kites\, which continues to this day. After serving as a Post-doctoral Associate and then Research Associate at the University of Florida from 1988 to 1992\, he conducted studies of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and the bird communities of south Florida pinelands for the National Park Service in Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park. In 1997\, Ken co-founded ARCI and soon branched out to other research challenges on a broader range of species. He has served on species status-review committees for state agencies and biological review panels for National Wildlife Refuges; and as a graduate student advisor and committee member in his position as an adjunct Associate Professor in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. Ken\, who received a Partners in Flight Research Award for his contributions to bird conservation\, provides frequent university guest lectures\, conducts training workshops for conservation professionals\, and presents many programs each year to citizen conservation groups on ARCI’s research and its implications for bird conservation. He feels very fortunate that\, in his many roles for ARCI\, he seems to have found the best of many professional worlds. \nNo reservations are required. Seating will begin at 5:30 p.m. A $10 suggested donation is always welcomed. \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:'Tips & Tricks' Birding Photography Program
DESCRIPTION:For the second year\, the Sanibel Captiva Audubon Society will provide a photography program for bird enthusiasts who want to learn the basics of bird photography. \nTopics that will be covered during this program range from lighting and composition to photography gear (i.e.\, iPhones\, 35mm mirrorless cameras\, etc.)\, how to capture different ‘subjects’ (i.e.\, birds\, scenery\, people\, etc.)\, and capturing birds in flight. \nThe program will consist of two parts\, each roughly 45 minutes to an hour long. The first part will be discussing the topics mentioned above in a group setting. The second part will involve a stroll down either Indigo Trail or Wildlife Drive\, looking for avian subjects to capture images of. \nFor those interested in learning some tips and tricks for bird photography\, the program will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday\, Jan. 29\, at the newly constructed ‘Roost’ next to the main parking lot of the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. \nThis program is free of charge. There is a $10 fee to drive through Wildlife Drive (Fee Booth prefers cash for small amounts) or show an entrance pass or duck stamp. \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Federal Duck Stamp Contest Winner
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service selects a winning duck stamp for the following year from some 200 contestants. The winning duck stamp artist becomes somewhat of a celebrity\, and\, J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island has the honor of hosting an appearance by the winner each year. Proceeds from the duck stamp program have purchased six million acres of wetlands as preserved habitat in its 90 years of existence. \nNamed for the man responsible for creating the Federal Duck Stamp program\, the refuge\, with support from the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS)\, schedules the artist’s appearance to coincide with Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling’s mid-October birthday. This year\, 2024-2025 Federal Duck Stamp Contest winner Chuck Black will make his appearance at “Ding” Darling on Thursday\, Oct. 24\, for a free 1 p.m. talk open to the public. \nA stamp-signing opportunity will follow his presentation. The stamp is currently for sale in the Refuge Nature Store. \nThe Montana artist worked as a wildlife biologist for seven years before devoting himself to his first love – wildlife art. His wins for the California and Colorado state duck stamp contests led to his decision to paint full-time. \nShare this:\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print
