American Legion Donates Pool-Access Chair to Sanibel Rec Center

The Sanibel Recreation Center received a generous donation of a specialized PVC pool-access chair by American Legion Post 123 to enhance accessibility in its zero-entry pool.

American Legion Post 123 Service Officer Karen Shutway presented the chair to Sanibel Recreation Center Deputy Director Char Durand. Other members of the Legion who were on hand included Commander Tim Moore and Finance Officer Craig Helmen.

The newly delivered chair—a model from Aqua Creek known for its corrosion-resistant PVC design, swing-out armrests, sliding footrest, and anti-tip features—is designed specifically to provide safe, dignified pool access for veterans, individuals with disabilities, and any patron whose mobility prevents use of pool steps or traditional ladders.

“At the Sanibel Recreation Center, our mission is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy recreation in a safe and welcoming environment,” said Durand. “This chair makes a real difference: it isn’t just about entering the pool, it’s about community.”

The zero-entry, leisure pool at the Sanibel Recreation Center already offers gentle access into the water via beach entry or aquatic chair lift, enabling swimmers of all ages and abilities to enter gradually. The addition of the access chair further broadens accessibility by enabling safe lateral transfers and mobility device support for those unable to walk or transfer by steps.

The American Legion Post 123 has long been committed to supporting veterans and community programs in the Sanibel area, and this donation is another example of its leadership in advancing accessibility and inclusion.

“We are proud to support the Sanibel Recreation Center in its efforts to provide quality recreation for all residents and visitors,” said Shutway. “Our veterans believe in service to the community, and this donation reflects our commitment to continuing to make the pool a welcoming place for everyone.”
