Sanibel Captiva Art League is holding its 12th Annual Bailey Bags for the FISH of SanCap fundraiser. To help fight hunger and meet other islander needs, Art League members paint reusable Bailey bags with the images of their choice. More than twenty bags will be displayed at Bailey’s Sanibel Store during the month of February. A Silent Auction sheet for each bag will be found at the service desk.
The very first year this fundraiser was held, the artists painted on paper bags and filled them with groceries. With the advent of reusable bags, the League switched. The cloth bags must be primed like regular painting canvas. The artists then paint their masterpieces, seal the painted surface and the bags are ready for display. The bidding competition can get fierce and all for a very worthy cause.
The Bailey family has been extremely gracious over the years to partner with the Art League. They donate the bags as well as the space to display them. Employees at the Bailey’s service desk install the exhibit and monitor the bid sheets. FISH contacts the winning bidders, collects the bids and will even deliver the bags if needed. A painting may be cut from the bag and framed for a permanent place in your home – or you can utilize the unique sack as a grocery or personal tote.
It is a brilliant collaboration between artists, retailers and citizens to benefit this wonderful agency which helps fight community hunger. Kudos to all involved! In the face of a pandemic, chairwoman Donna Filomio and a special collaboration of civic-minded community members persevered to make this much-needed fundraiser prevail. Take yourself to Bailey’s and bid on your favorite bags!
