The BIG Arts Concert Band will kick off its 22nd season with its first practice in October. The band, and island institution since 2003, is a no-audition ensemble open to instrumentalists of all abilities, ages, and locations.
While some musicians have been playing for years, others have not picked up an instrument since high school or have begun playing late in life. Many of the band members are Sanibel residents, but some are from off the island. A love of making music with like-minded people is all that’s needed to join.
Bank practices are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings at the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ on Periwinkle Way. The season starts with the first practice on Oct. 28, and the group will perform five concerts this year:
• Nov. 11 – Veterans Day, Sanibel City Hall
• Dec. 11 – BIG Arts Holiday Concert (joint concert with BIG Arts Chorus)
• Dec. 13 – Faith Methodist Church, Ft. Myers
• Mar. 10 – Shell Point
• Mar. 25 – BIG Arts Spring Concert (joint concert with BIG Arts Chorus)
The BIG Arts Concert Band is always eager to welcome new members. For further information, contact Band Director Melissa Calkin by email or phone at melissa.calkin@gmail.com, 303-903-8305.
