Inbound traffic on the Sanibel Causeway increased nearly 8 percent in May compared to the previous year, from 262,653 to 283,526 vehicles. The busiest May on record was in 2001, when 289,756 vehicles crossed the scenic bridge. The year-to-date traffic count has reached 2.3 million, which remains statically flat over the last four years. The three-mile Causeway is owned and operated by Lee County, and the City of Sanibel receives a 21 percent share of the surplus tolls.
