When political violence prompted Elizabeth Schramm to flee her adoptive home of Margarita Island nine years ago, she wondered if she’d ever find another paradise like that Venezuelan isle.
In Captiva and Sanibel, she has again discovered paradise and something else: a place that cares about the people who work here and a strong sense of community.
A new career drew Elizabeth to the islands sight unseen. She eventually joined the team at Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts. She loved her work and was training for a new position when Hurricane Ian devastated the resorts.
After a temporary layoff, Elizabeth returned to work at ‘Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa. She still felt that deep sense of caring and support, but the post-storm recovery turned her 35-minute off-island commute into a brutal two hours.
“This is one of the best places I’ve ever worked, but the time lost and gas costs were killing me,” Elizabeth said. The financial and physical toll prompted her to share with her ‘Tween Waters manager, who suggested
Community Housing & Resources.
Elizabeth applied to CHR and soon found her new home. The income-based rent helps her deal with housing costs today and in the long term.
“CHR isn’t just about affordable housing,” explains Elizabeth. “The properties are in excellent condition, well maintained, and they’re proud of that.”
CHR’s level of care sends an essential message to workers like Elizabeth, who keep the islands running.
“It feels great knowing our community values us. And that makes it home,” she said. “They provide a quality apartment experience. I can’t say enough about CHR.”
