CHR Resident Spotlight: Joesphine

Giving working people a chance to live affordably in Sanibel is the heart and soul of Community Housing & Resources. That passion can inspire CHR’s residents to give back, too.

Take Josephine Crowne. Born and raised in the Philippines, she married an American and moved to Sanibel Island to live near his family. With their two children, the couple looked forward to a happy life together.

That all changed when Josephine’s husband died unexpectedly.

Suddenly, a single mom with two growing kids in school, the hard-working hairstylist found it challenging to find stable housing that she could afford. She turned to CHR.

“They were very helpful,” said Josephine. “They were really good to us during that time. It’s a good program, very helpful for the community.”

CHR guided her through the application process, and she soon found a place for her family at one of its properties. That’s where they’ve lived for the past 14 years — until now. Josephine closed on her own home in August in Fort Myers, where she currently works.

“A lot of people like me need the help of CHR. Now that I have a new opportunity from working hard, I want to pass it on to someone who needs it like I did,” she said.

For Josephine and her family, CHR provided a place where they could rebuild their lives and move on to a new adventure. For that, Josephine is forever grateful.

“I thank God for CHR,” she said. “They saved my family.”
