The new year launches with two events for the Captiva Island Historical Society, each bringing history to life in unique ways.
On Monday, Jan. 12, at 4:30 p.m, climb aboard the Lady Chadwick, flagship of Captiva Cruises, for a special evening cruise to Cabbage Key. CIHS directors and historians Betty Anholt and Captain Brian Holaway will narrate a historical look at Pine Island Sound and the surrounding islands on the way to dinner at Cabbage Key Inn.
During dinner, Cabbage Key second-generation owner Rob Wells will share his knowledge of the inn, stories of famous visitors, and all its nuances.
It’s a rare chance to experience the magic of what happens at night on the water, which few have a chance to witness.
The cost of the event, which includes a casual dinner, soft drinks, and one alcoholic beverage, is $100. Reservations are required and can be made through the CIHS website. The cruise departs at 4:30 from McCarthy’s Marina, 11401 Andy Rosse Lane, Captiva.
Then, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m., it’s a feast for the eyes as we learn about Captiva’s history through creativity. Captiva resident, artist, and author Ilie Ruby presents her artwork inspired by photos and information from the historical society’s archives. Ruby brings photos of Captiva’s early settlers and visitors to life using various mediums to create beautiful pieces of art. CIHS directors share stories about the images, adding to the evening’s unique flavor.
The event takes place at the Captiva Civic Association, located at 11550 Chapin Lane, Captiva. Cost is $15 and includes light refreshments. There will be a cash bar. Reservations are requested. Information and reservations are available for all events online here, by calling (239) 472-2323 or emailing mail@captivaislandhistoricalsociety.org.
Florida Trust Wealth Management is the season sponsor for CIHS events.
