City Council Adds Second Meeting to Monthly Calendar

by SC Reporter Emilie Alfino

In the hopes of avoiding 11-1/2 hour meetings, Sanibel City Council has decided to add a second monthly meeting to its calendar. The objectives of the change are to facilitate citizen participation, accelerate the legislative process, and shorten the length of City Council meetings.

The agendas for these meetings will be structured a little differently. Here they are:

First (regular) Monthly Council Meeting Agenda:
• Call to order, invocation, pledge, roll call, agenda set
• Planning Commission report
• Public comments
• Proclamations and presentations (each speaker limited to 10 minutes)
• Second readings and hearings (some meetings may include first readings)
• Draft legislation discussion
• Committees, boards, and commissions
• Old business
• New business
• First readings
• Consent agenda
• Information Items
• General council discussion (incorporating comments, future agenda items, and general discussion)
• City manager and city attorney reports
• Public comment
• Council reactions

Second Council Meeting Agenda:
• Call to order, pledge, roll call, set agenda
• Public comments (time limited)
• Proclamations and presentations (not more than two presentations and each speaker limited to 10 minutes)
• First readings
• Draft legislation discussion
• General Council discussion (incorporating comments, future agenda items, and general discussion)
• City Manager report
• Council reactions
