The City of Sanibel proclaimed October Placenta Accreta Spectrum Awareness month on Tuesday, Oct. 21, during its regular meeting, joining the State of Florida to bring attention to one of the most critical maternal health issues facing women and families today.

In 1960, placenta accreta occurred in roughly one in 30,000 cesarean births; today it affects 1 in 272, marking a dramatic and urgent rise in this life-threatening condition.

Florida currently has the second-highest cesarean section rate in the nation, with one in three women giving birth by cesarean section.

Increased awareness, early detection, proper surgical planning, and access to specialized medical care can save lives and improve outcomes for mothers and babies.

“No mother should lose her life by giving life,” said Rebekah Barney, who runs the Florida Chapter of RxCompassion. “This proclamation is not just symbolic. Together we can make childbirth safer and make sure that no women dies giving birth.”
