The City of Sanibel, with great sadness, announced on Wednesday, Nov. 29 former council member and long-time friend of the city James “Jim” Jennings had passed away. Jennings served on the council for 14 years and held the second-longest tenure of a council member since the city’s inception.

“Council Member Jennings brought more to our community than just his voice, ” said Mayor Richard Johnson. “Jim, as most of us knew him, was a leader on Sanibel in the development of relationships beyond our shores. He was known for helping others by finding common ground for all to consider and appreciate. Jim will be missed, but he continues to be appreciated for his service to our city and his love for Sanibel.”

Jenning’s accomplishments on the council include the construction of the Community Park, the funding and development of the Sanibel Recreation Center, moving the city to the forefront of water quality advocacy at the regional and state level, and his exceptional work with the Florida League of Cities. He had also helped with recoveries from hurricanes Charley, Wilma, Frances and Irma during his council tenure.
