Committee of the Islands supports Protect Captiva’s legal fund with a donation, presented to Captiva Civic Association President Lisa Riordan, center.

The Board of the Committee of the Islands invited Captiva Civic Association President Lisa Riordan to its December meeting to present an update on the Protect Captiva initiative and to present a check in support of the initiative’s legal fund.

Protect Captiva is an especially appropriate recipient of COTI support, as COTI emerged in 1975 from an effort to protect Sanibel from overdevelopment by the County.

As noted on its website, “The Protect Captiva Coalition “was established in June 2023 by concerned citizens and organizations in opposition to increasing building height and density and opening the door for hundreds of new hotel rooms on Captiva Island.”

While progress has been achieved, critical legal challenges remain, and continued funding is essential. Detailed information on the effort’s status is available on the Coalition website.

While the proposed density increases would be on Captiva, South Seas Resort plans would add both environmental and evacuation challenges for Sanibel, as well. COTI urges its members and others within the Captiva and Sanibel communities to educate themselves about the actions and issues and to support the ongoing legal challenges, with contributions made online here or with a check, payable to CCA Foundation (“Legal Fund” on the memo line), to PO Box 775, Captiva, FL 33924.
