“It’s Time to Talk Transportation” will be the theme of the next Committee of the Islands (COTI) Conversation from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 21, 2024 at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way. The conversation will be led by Sanibel resident and COTI Transportation Committee Chair Bill Millar. There will be time for questions and comments, and complimentary wine, cheese, and other refreshments will be served. There is no charge for this event.

The premise of COTI’s recently released paper on the topic of transportation is that rebuilding and making Sanibel more resilient will require not only attention to the physical aspects of roads and streets, but also consideration of other ideas. Under consideration are improving traffic flow, encouraging walking and biking, determining whether any form of public transportation service should be introduced in the island community, and examining what steps could be taken to accommodate the growing use of electrically powered vehicles by residents and visitors. This important, far-reaching paper will serve as a basis for the Conversation.

Bill Millar has an M.A. in urban and regional planning. Among other positions held, he served as developer of statewide public transit programs at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and as CEO of the American Public Transportation Association.

This COTI Conversation and other recent efforts reflect COTI’s critical role as local government watchdog and community advocate. Additional information about the organization will be available at the event. For more information about COTI, visit www.coti.org.
