Up for discussion at the Sanibel City Council’s April 21 meeting was whether the council could establish speed limits within the city via resolution, as opposed to requiring an ordinance, which would allow for public input.
The areas that were under consideration were imposing a maximum island-wide speed limit of 35 miles per hour; reducing the speed limit on Periwinkle west to Tarpon Bay to 30 mph from 35 mph; and reducing the speed limit on Periwinkle east to the lighthouse to 25 mph from 30 mph.
“I think that public input is very important,” said Council member Holly Smith. “These are not light decisions to be taken. I think it should be by ordinance.”
Council member Laura DeBruce agreed, “It’s important to have public comment.”
