The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge will be closed Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15 in preparation for the upcoming Tropical Storm Fred. The refuge will remain closed until further notice.
The closure includes Wildlife Drive, all trails and Tarpon Bay Explorers, the refuge concessionaire. A safety assessment will be conducted post-storm. Further announcements will be made at that time. To confirm refuge hours, call 239-472-1100 or check the refuge’s official Facebook page.
The National Hurricane Center’s Friday morning report stated the center of Fred was moving along the northern coast of Cuba as a tropical depression. It was approximately 270 miles from Key West and predicted to pass by Sanibel & Captiva Saturday, Aug. 14, as it travels through the Gulf of Mexico.
