Domicile Day, a monthly seminar series on Florida residency, domicile status and estate planning hosted by The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company, continues on Thursday, Jan. 16. The program will take place simultaneously at the firm’s offices at 13525 Bell Tower Drive in Fort Myers and 2450 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel, beginning promptly at 11 a.m.
Each monthly session explains how to establish Florida residency, domicile status and corresponding estate planning. The program begins with a presentation and Q&A session led by Trust Company team members alongside guest presenter and local estate planning attorney, Kenneth E. Kemp of Kemp & Mace, P.A.
Part-time or seasonal residents who spend more time in Southwest Florida often ask the firm’s professionals about their residency status, including questions about steps to protect their assets and how to maintain their domicile after being displaced by a hurricane.
Also discussed during the ‘Domicile Day’s’ seminar are homestead property tax exemptions. With the March 1 deadline fast approaching, this seminar is important to attend should you have questions about exemption eligibility and to learn about new tax advantages such as the $50,000 Reduction in Valuation and Portability.
“Living in Florida does not automatically mean you have a Florida domicile,” explained Megan Marquardt, CFP®, CFTA Fort Myers president for The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company. “A lot of new homeowners in Florida don’t realize this difference, but it’s crucial for estate planning and understanding the relevant laws. We highly recommend anyone moving to or thinking about moving to the state attend a domicile session to gain more insight.”
The Trust Company’s next Domicile Day seminar is set for Thursday, Feb. 20.
The Jan. 16 program will be simulcast from the Fort Myers office to the Sanibel office. Seating is limited at both locations, and reservations are required. $2 million in investable assets and higher. To register, contact Frances Steger at fsteger@sancaptrustco.com or 239-472-8300.
The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company is also offering personalized, confidential consultations about Florida residency status, estate planning or wealth management needs.
