FISH Recognizes World Alzheimer’s Month

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

FISH of SANCAP is a steady resource for neighbors navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease, and taking a moment to highlight those resources in honor of the 14th World Alzheimer’s Month in September.

Senior Services Director Erika Arnowitza, a Certified Dementia Practitioner through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners, offers guidance to families seeking support and understanding.

“Working with older adults means hearing their stories, honoring their wisdom, and helping them remain engaged in life,” said Arnowitz.

“Through my certification, I’m able to recognize individual needs and connect people with the right resources so they can live with dignity and comfort,” she said.

This year’s World Alzheimer’s Month theme is “Ask About Dementia, Ask About Alzheimer’s,” aimed at encouraging open conversations. Dementia is often misunderstood, which can prevent a diagnosis or access to help in time to make a meaningful difference, according to Alzheimer’s Disease International.

FISH recognizes the importance of having open conversations and the need for practical support. From reassurance calls to transportation for medical appointments, to friendly faces luncheons that bring seniors together, FISH designs its programs to keep older adults connected and cared for.

In 2024 alone, FISH made more than 1,500 reassurance calls and delivered nearly 250 “smile boxes” to brighten the days of local seniors.

“Awareness begins with listening and learning,” said FISH Executive Director Maria Espinoza. “When we better understand dementia, we are better prepared to stand beside our neighbors who live with it.”

As the world unites this September to recognize World Alzheimer’s Month, FISH invites the community to join in by asking questions, sharing information, and supporting those affected by dementia in their own communities.
