For the Record

The Sanibel Police handled the following area incidents from May 14 to May 20:

May 15: Officers responded to a report of aggravated assault. A verbal argument between homeowner Mark Furr and employees of a moving company escalated until Furr allegedly threatened the employees with a firearm. Furr was arrested on six charges – two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, firing a weapon in public, using a firearm under the influence of alcohol, a DUI and refusal to submit to DUI testing. He was released May 16 from Lee County Jail on a $51,000 bond.

May 17, 2024: A traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle for excessive speed. The driver was subsequently issued an NTA for unlawful speed (78 MPH in a 35 MPH zone).

May 18, 2024: Officers responded to a report of a man walking in a wooded area with a rifle. Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle illegally parked with an incorrect license plate attached. Shortly after, two males hunting iguanas with an air rifle were also located in the same area. Upon further investigation, the registered owner of the vehicle was issued an NTA for tag attached not assigned, the license plate was seized, and the vehicle towed. The two males were educated on hunting iguanas on Sanibel and picked up by another licensed driver.

May 19: A traffic stop was initiated for excessive speed. A records check revealed the vehicle’s registration was expired and the driver’s license was suspended for criminal failure to pay. The driver, Abel Castro of Cape Coral, as subsequently issued citations for unlawful speed, an expired tag and arrested for knowingly driving a suspended license. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

May 19: A traffic stop was initiated for speeding. The driver, Seneca Santana of Lehigh Acres, received a citation for unlawful speed and was arrested for DUI.

May 19: A traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle for excessive speed. The driver was subsequently issued a citation for unknowingly driving with a suspended license. The license plate was also seized and the vehicle towed from the scene.

May 20, 2024: A traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle for excessive speed. The driver was subsequently issued a citation for speeding and an NTA for never having a driver’s license issued. The vehicle was removed from the scene by a licensed driver.
