Illinois Man Faces Multiple Charges Following Domestic Dispute

An Illinois man was arrested Thursday, July 1, following a domestic disturbance at Sundial West. Resort security contacted Sanibel Police at 6:45 p.m. after neighbors reported shouting between a male and female inside one of the units.

When police arrived on the scene, the female answered the door and attempted to exit the unit. But the male, Matthew Campbell, grabbed the female, pulled her away from the door and back inside the unit. Police gave Campbell multiple verbal commands to let the female go and step outside.

Campbell did not comply with the officers’ commands and they entered the unit to separate the pair. Campbell then began struggling with officers and struck an officer in the eye during the altercation. Campbell continued to resist arrest and only complied when an officer displayed his taser.

Police determined Campbell was the primary aggressor and charged him with two counts of battery, resisting an officer with violence and false imprisonment. He was booked into Lee County Jail and released the following day on a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.

Police Make Three DUI Arrests

Elise Cordova of Fort Myers was traveling east on Periwinkle Way at 1:45 a.m. June 29 when an officer observed her vehicle swerving and failing to maintain its lane of travel. During the traffic stop at 1700 Periwinkle Way, Cordova showed signs of being impaired.

Cordova was given and failed a field sobriety test. A breathalyzer test showed her blood alcohol level to be over twice the legal limit. She was charged with driving under the influence and booked into the Lee County Jail. She was released later that morning on a $1,000 bond.

Garrett Bryan of Bokeelia, Fla., was traveling east on Periwinkle Way at 11:20 p.m. Thursday, July 1, when an officer observed his vehicle briefly leave the roadway near 2163 Periwinkle Way. The officer then observed Bryan’s vehicle continue to swerve within its lane of travel.

Bryan showed signs of being impaired and told officers he was tired after working a long shift. During a search of his vehicle, officers found marijuana for which Bryan said he had a medical marijuana card. He was given and failed a field sobriety test. A breathalyzer test showed he was just over the legal limit.

Bryan was charged with driving under the influence and booked into the Lee County Jail. He was released July 2 on a $1,000 bond.

Police observed a vehicle traveling south on Lindgren Boulevard at a slow speed in the early morning of July 7 and it appeared to be dragging something. The vehicle operated by Mary Haller of Fort Myers had partially pulled to the side of the road when the officer observed a shredded right rear tire barely on the rim.

Officers observed further major damage to the passenger side of Haller’s vehicle. Haller stated she was not aware of being in any accident and thought she was on U.S. 41 in Fort Myers. Officers observed additional signs Haller was impaired. She was given a field sobriety test, but was unable to finish it due to the weather from Tropical Storm Elsa.

Haller was transported to the Lee County Jail where she refused a breathalyzer test. She was booked into the jail on a DUI charge and released later that morning on a $1,000 bond.

Citations Issued

Kenneth Colter of Sanibel was traveling west on Periwinkle Way at 2:15 p.m June 29, when he stopped at the intersection of Causeway Boulevard. As his vehicle proceeded into the intersection it was struck by a vehicle operated by Jenny Ackerson of Port Charlotte, Fla. Police reviewed footage from the city’s traffic cameras and found Ackerson did not stop at the stop sign. She was issued a citation for running a stop sign. No injuries were reported.

Damon Law of Cape Coral was stopped in traffic on Sanibel Captiva Road at 9:55 a.m. June 28 when the back of his vehicle struck by a vehicle operated by Lindsay Teason of Manchester Center, Vt. The back of Teason’s vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Blake Bachman of Murfeesboro, Tenn. Bachman was issued a citation for careless driving. No injuries were reported.
