State of Emergency Extended Another 60 Days: In accordance with the guidance of the governor, per Sanibel Vice Mayor Holly Smith, the state of emergency will stay in effect for another 60 days.
Sanibel Council voted unanimously to allow Waste Management’s request for a temporary solid waste and recycle collection early start time due to the heat. “Heat stress and heat stroke are serious issues,” said Councilman John Henshaw. The start time will be 6 a.m. for May 1 through October 31. This applies to residential only, and there will be a 30-day review period.
Regarding the December 15, 2025, build back permit due deadline, City Council voted 4-1 (Councilman John Henshaw against) to extend the deadline 12 months, creating an exception for Gulf Beach Condo and Sandpiper Beach Condo.
City Council decided to designate Steering Committees for the Sanibel Plan Update and Transportation Master Plan. A representative be appointed to the steering committee for the Plan Update from the following: • 1 person from the Planning Commission • 1 person from SCCF (staff or board) • 1 person from the SanCap Chamber of Commerce (staff or board) • 1 person from CHR (staff or board) • 1 person from COTI • 2 citizens at large. A representative be appointed to the steering committee for the Transportation Master Plan from the following: • 1 person from the Planning Commission • 1 person from SCCF (staff or board) • 1 person from the SanCap Chamber of Commerce (staff or board) • 1 person from COTI, 1 citizen at large.
A discussion item was withdrawn to be brought back next month: an ordinance defining micromobility devices, motorized scooters and mopeds and setting forth a tiered system of fines.
