Two Public Hearings Scheduled
Two matters had first readings and were scheduled for public hearings on July 16. First is the matter of school speed zones. The proposal is to amend the Code of Ordinances relating to traffic by adding a new division for school speed zones. Second is the matter of Bailey’s Shopping Center’s Code of Ordinances amendments. The Planning Commission previously passed a resolution in favor of this matter.
Public Hearing Sunsets Local Contractor Review Board
City Council on June 4 held a public hearing sunsetting the local Contractor Review Board. This was necessary because Florida State Statute now pre-empts local municipalities as of July 1, 2024, from issuing local licenses and indeed cannot require local licenses and anything not licensed by the state. “All control now moves to the state,” Mayor Johnson explained. This ordinance was adopted unanimously.
Temporary Signs Allowed on Commercial Properties
The city wishes to support local businesses as they recover from storm-related property damage following Hurricane Ian. Specifically, for commercial properties where the principal structure has been destroyed or demolished due to Hurricane Ian and they are in the process of rebuilding, temporary signage will be allowed to announce the redevelopment of the property. Signage would be limited to one sign, not to exceed eight feet in height or 32 square feet in size, to be in place for no more than 18 months. Such temporary announcement signage must be removed once the building is complete and a certificate of occupancy is issued.
