First Readings. Sanibel City Council held first readings on Tuesday, Oct. 1, for code of ordinances related to updates to the city’s determination of impermeable coverage and filing procedures for development permits.

Contract & Purchases Code (Finance Department). Council tasked the finance department with creating a centralized procurement division to oversee city-wide purchasing as part of the council’s 2024 FY goals. A significant component of this initiative was creating a Procurement Manager position, which was filled by Brett Schira earlier this year. The department made four suggested updates to the purchase policy. On Tuesday, Oct. 1, the council held a second reading and public hearing on the ordinance.

Small Business Loan Program. Doug Congress provided information Tuesday on the Accelerate Small Business Loan Program, a Charitable Foundation of the Islands, and Sanibel Captiva Community Bank partnership. It’s a time-limited loan program for Sanibel and Captiva Islands small businesses. Third-party investors who love the islands have made the partnership possible and wish to see the small businesses return to normal operations after Hurricane Ian. Currently, $1.2M is available for lending.

Breast Cancer Awareness. City Council proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual initiative encouraging residents to educate themselves on the preventive measures and support those currently fighting the disease and their caregivers.

Native Plant Awareness. The Florida Native Plant Society established October as Florida Native Plant Month in 2015. The more than 3,000 species of native plants in Florida serve as the foundation for wildlife habitat and improve biodiversity by providing critical resources for pollinators and other native and migratory wildlife. They are specifically adapted to the state’s rainfall patterns and soil conditions and reduce the need for irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides due to their resistance to pests and disease.
