Sanibel Public Library has planned in-person programs including storytimes, tech help, as well as virtual author programs. The Library’s public online calendar has the most up-to-date information about programs for children and adults.
These upcoming Library programs are open to the public. No registration required:
Readers are invited to come in to discuss “The Personal Librarian” by Marie Benedict at 11 a.m. on February 2! The next book to be discussed is “Mayflower” by Nathaniel Philbrick; to be discussed in March. The “The Magnolia Palace” by Fiona Davis will follow. Ariana McDaniel of Sanibel Public Library will lead these discussions.
Teens are invited to study hall – anytime between the hours of 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8. Snacks will be provided. Call the Library to ask Megan Willis about earning volunteer hours for school.
Family Storytime with Shannon Gafgen will be held at 10:30 a.m. on two Fridays this month; February 9 and 16. Storytime is for children age five and under and their caregiver.
Duane Shaffer’s popular WWII lecture series continues at 10 a.m. Friday, February 23, where Shaffer presents “America at War: Guadalcanal Campaign.” Learn how American forces were pitted against the Japanese in a bitter life or death struggle in the Pacific Theater from August 7, 1942 to February 9, 1943. Stop by the Library this month to see a collection of WWII models created by Shaffer.
Sanibel Public Library invites you to a Week of Learning, February 12 to 16; each day a different staff member will present a niche topic.
Embark on a creative journey with Crochet Class, a delightful exploration of the art of yarn crafting at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 12. Guided by SPL’s Ariana McDaniel, it is perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Unlock the full potential of your iPhone camera! Come to the SPL at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13 for a class with Danny Hussey. Learn to send, print, and edit photos plus how to use iPhone photo apps.
“Frankincense and Other Aromatic Tree Resins Throughout History” with Matt Gindling is at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14. See and smell some of the plant resins of the Old World, such as frankincense, myrrh, styrax, labdanum, galbanum, and mastic. Learn about their appearance in myths, religious practices, as well as modern day applications.
On Thursday, February 15 at 10 a.m. martial arts instructor Eden Sherman presents “Women Warriors – Intro to Taekwondo.” The class will be interactive; participants will be led through a series of stretching and exercises. Each participant will work at their own pace to match their age and fitness level. Participants are requested to wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement, and athletic shoes.
Tech expert Andrew Dyen-Shapiro will be introducing different features of Ancestry Library Edition at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 16. A presentation about Sanibel Public Library’s digital archive—narrated by Sanibel historian Betty Anholt—will follow the class.
An Introduction to Lavender with Shannon Gafgen is at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 16. Gafgen will be speaking about her time as a lavender farmer in NJ. She will talk about the rich history of lavender, its properties, how to grow it, and demonstrate how to use the buds and oil in a variety of products.
Perfect for families – Saturday Crafterday – hosted by Melissa Gindling, a professional artist and coloring book creator, will start at 11 a.m. on February 17.

National Book Award-winning author Jason Mott presents “Exploring Identity, Love, and Being Black in America” at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20. “Radical Respect & Candor” with Author Kim Scott is on Wednesday, February 28 at 2 p.m. Head to the Library’s online calendar for links to register for these virtual talks. Please register children who want to R.E.A.D. to Rizzo, (a therapy dog). Contact Megan Willis at mwillis@sanlib.org to schedule a time slot on Monday, February 19. This program encourages conversation and develops reading and communication skills.
Sanibel Public Library offers “Computer Coach” service; book an appointment to bring in your device for technology assistance with Hoopla, Kanopy, Libby, and other Library apps. These apps allow Library cardholders to download eBooks, magazines, and audiobooks, or stream music and movies. Call the Library at (239) 472-2483 to schedule an appointment.
Sanibel Public Library cards are available to all residents of Sanibel and Lee County, Florida, at no charge. You must present your valid driver’s license (or similar government ID) to staff, showing your current Lee County address. Visitor cards are available for a $10 fee and are good for one year. Computers, printers, scanners, and fax service as well as magazines and daily newspapers are also available.
