Man Charged After Traffic Incident On Sanibel

Richard Swanson of Sanibel is facing two felony charges after verbally accosting a Sanibel Police Officer who was directing traffic on Dec. 21, 2023. Swanson refused to follow the officer’s instructions and drove towards the officer before speeding away from the scene.

He was arrested Thursday, Jan. 25 by the Lee County Sheriff’s Fugitive Warrants Unit and transported to the Lee County Jail. He has been charged with fleeing/eluding police and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Swanson was released from jail Friday, Jan. 26 on a $25,000 bond. He has a court appearance scheduled for Feb. 26.

Police issued two criminal citations Tuesday, Jan. 23 to drivers who never received a driver’s license. The first driver was stopped for running a stop sign. The second driver was stopped for not wearing a seat belt and was also found to not have insurance. That car was towed from the scene.
