Open Burning Will Cease Due to High Fire Danger

provided by Sanibel Fire & Rescue District

Sanibel Fire & Rescue District has prohibited all open burning on the island effective immediately due to the extremely dry conditions. The district responded to a brush fire last weekend at Gulfside City Park Beach caused by a cigarette butt. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and the prohibition is to reduce or eliminate further brush fires.

“Our highest priority is the safety of all residents and visitors on the island,” said Sanibel Fire Chief Bill Briscoe. “Prohibiting open burning will ensure we reduce or eliminate any new starts for brush fires.”

Lee County has experienced very little rainfall over the last several months leading to the Fire Danger Forecast levels to be high to extreme. Coupled with a drought index higher than 650, this has led fire personnel to be overly cautious during these dry periods. The prohibition will remain in effect until further notice.
