The doors to the first Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club meeting of the new year will open at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel Captiva Rd. Ocean Research & Conservation Association CEO/Senior Scientist Edie Widdler, Ph.D., will kick off the year as the first guest speaker.

ORCA is a not-for-profit organization Widdler help found in 2005 to help save the ocean she has spent most of her career exploring as a deep sea researcher. She earned wide acclaim in 2012 when she captured the first video of the giant squid Architeuthis using a stealth camera of her own design. She repeated the feat in 2019, filming a giant squid in the Gulf of Mexico. Her deep sea research has been featured in BBC, PBS, Discovery Channel and National Geographic television productions.

She will present “Here Be Monsters: Exploring the Edge of the Map” at the shell club meeting, and copies of her book “Below the Edge of Darkness” will be available. Doors open with a silent auction and time for social networking. Free parking is available at the Recreation Center.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club awards grants from the proceeds of their annual show. Grants are given towards education and research in the fields of conchology and malacology, as well as for conservation and water quality projects, primarily in Southwest Florida.
