Planning Commission Chair Roger Grogman is urging Sanibel residents to apply for the seat vacated by Laura DeBruce, who was recently appointed to the City Council. DeBruce is filling the remaining term of former council member Dr. Scott Crater, who resigned in January over a change in Florida law.

Applications for planning commission are due April 17 to fill the remainder of DeBruce’s three-year term beginning May 7, 2024 and expiring January 12, 2026. City Council will make the appointment at its May 7 meeting.

“It’s a worthwhile job with a positive outcome,” Grogman said. “This is something people can do for the community. They will be getting involved in running the community.”

Added Commissioner Lyman Welch, “It’s good to see the public take an interest in what the Sanibel Planning Commission does. It’s great that we had the public coming today to our meeting.”

Grogman said people showing an interest is a great sign. “Your engagement with Sanibel is a tangible one,” he said. “One way to express that interest is through submission of an application to serve on the Planning Commission.”

To date, the city has received two applications. Grogman said he is hoping to receive an additional two or three by the April 17 deadline. Commissioners must attend meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at 9 a.m. at BIG ARTS.
