The Sanibel Police Department (SPD) Police Aides play an essential role in keeping the flow of traffic on Sanibel moving when traveling on and off the island. Traffic control of thousands of vehicles through the island’s single entrance and exit point can be challenging. No one enjoys traffic delays, and it’s the men and women of the SPD Police Aide Unit that help keep people moving to their destination safely.
Sanibel is one of the few island cities in Florida that maintains a small-town feel with its quaint two-lane roads and absence of traffic lights. These qualities add to Sanibel’s rural charm. SPD Police Aides tackle the important job of directing traffic in middle-of-the-day heat, afternoon rains, and with hungry no-see-ums at dusk, making travel throughout the island as efficient as possible.
A few facts about SPD’s Police Aide Unit:
• 8 full-time and 6 part-time employees make up the team
• 10 hours each day are spent directing the flow of traffic at up to 5 locations on the island during peak visitor season
• In addition to directing traffic, Police Aides help with escorting oversized vehicles on Sanibel roads and assist with parking enforcement
“As you make your way around this beautiful island where so many love to spend their time, please remember to thank the hard-working Police Aides of the Sanibel Police Department who help residents, visitors, and workers move about the island safely,” said Chief William Dalton, Sanibel Police Department
