Sanibel Police responded to the scene of an unarmed burglary at 2:54 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 at a resort on East Gulf Drive. Witnesses observed a person enter unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot and remove items. The victim at the scene chose not to press charges.
Vehicle Crashes
Amber Shaw of Fort Myers was making a right turn from Bailey Road at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 25, when her vehicle struck a vehicle operated by Michael Tracey of Captiva, which was westbound on Periwinkle Way. No injuries were reported. Tracey was issued a verbal warning for a suspended driver’s license.
Derek Rooney of Punta Gorda was traveling east on Periwinkle Way at 4:38 p.m. Monday, June 27, when the back of his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Alfonso Turcaz of Fort Myers. No injures were treated at the scene.
Dorothy Federico of Sanibel was traveling west on Middle Gulf Drive at 3:25 p.m. Monday, June 27, when her moped’s tires lost traction on the left turn at Par View Drive causing her to crash. Federico received non-incapacitating injuries and declined medical transport.
Animal Reports
Officer Steve Royka monitored pods of manatees near the shore last week, so they would not be not disturbed by beachgoers. Royka monitored eight manatees Thursday, June 23 at Casa Ybel Resort and 10 of them on Friday, June 24 near Sanibel Arms on East Gulf Drive. He then kept people away from a pod of manatees Saturday, June 25 at the Lighthouse Pier until the Florida Wildlife Commission Marine Unit arrived on the scene.
A small alligator was reported in the 1400 block of Middle Gulf Drive on Sunday, June 26, but it went into the bushes when officers arrived on the scene. The alligator did not appear to be a nuisance and was not relocated.
Two iguanas were sighted Sunday, June 26 in the backyard of a home on Limpet Drive.
Officer Alexander Magoon rescued an injured turtle on Monday, June 27 near Sanibel City Hall on Dunlop Road and transported it to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
Two adult coyotes were sighted at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 near the intersection of Sanibel Captiva Road and Bowman’s Beach Road.
