Public Hearing Scheduled for Boat Ramp Penalties

by SC Reporter Emilie Alfino

A public hearing to discuss changes to the parking fines at the city’s boat ramp will be on November 4 during the regular Sanibel City Council meeting. Council members will also discuss minor changes to beach parking.

The proposal is a tiered penalty structure at the boat ramp, with $250 plus a $10 filing fee for the first offense, and $500 plus a $10 filing fee for the second or subsequent offenses.

The suggested ordinance clarifies that “daily use” at the boat ramp is “daily boat ramp use.” Anyone using the boat ramp to launch or retrieve a boat is subject to a $40 daily fee, even if they do not use the parking facilities. It further clarifies that vehicles without a boat trailer are prohibited from parking in those spaces reserved for boat ramp parking.

Regarding beach parking, here are the suggested ordinance changes:
• Delete references to “city pay box” at beach parking facilities. The city eliminated pay boxes following Hurricane Ian and replaced them with an online application payment system.
• Add Turner Beach Park to the beach park facilities.
