The Junonia is the “holy grail” of Sanibel shells, but this one is described as a Junonia “freak.” At first glance, the shell appears to be normal, but turn it over and it’s apparent the shell is very unusual. It has a curved tip which makes it a collector’s dream. The shell was part of a large collection donated to the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club and no data was included.
The rare Junonia, along with four other items, will go up for auction at the 2 p.m. Feb. 6 shell club meeting at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way. A silent auction of more than 40 shells and shell related items will begin at 1:30 pm. The meeting is free of charge and open to the public. Funds raised at the auctions will support the shell club and its grants program.
