The Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club heard from Calusa Waterkeeper Captain Codty Pierce, a passionate environmental advocate dedicated to protecting Florida’s coastal waters.
Inspired by childhood adventures, Pierce leads efforts to preserve the Caloosahatchee River and more than 1,000 square miles of local Southwest Florida estuaries.
As a Waterkeeper, Pierce monitors water quality, investigates pollution, and engages communities in sustainable practices. He collaborates with local authorities and organizations to promote policies ensuring clean water for future generations.
Before becoming a Waterkeeper, Pierce worked with reptiles, wetland restoration, and native landscaping and ran a fishing guide service in Lee County.
Pierce’s deep community ties inspire his commitment to preserving natural resources. He emphasizes respecting the environment’s rich cultural history, saying, “We must honor the past to protect the future.”
Driven by a love for Florida’s unique flora and fauna, Pierce continues to expand his expertise through research and outreach. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and fostering environmental education.
His leadership in conservation significantly impacts Florida’s ecosystems. He balances ecological sustainability with community needs, striving for a harmonious future.
Pierce enjoys fly fishing for tailing redfish – a true joy – when he’s not working.
