The Rotary Club this week heard from Colin Hargis, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University. He stepped into a winning athletic program at the university in March 2024, and he has continued its incline.
Hargis is very proud of his student athletes and proudly calls them champions in the classroom, champions in competition, and champions in the community. He and his team are proud of their seven conference championships last year, as well as the 1,000 hours of community service they performed.
FGCU Athletics has 15 programs with more than 250 student-athletes from over 30 countries and 34 states, with half being Florida natives.
Hargis brings two decades of Division I experience, including 15 years at the North Carolina State University, where he rose to Senior Associate AD for External Relations, and led revenue-generating initiatives that brought in more than $27 million annually.
Under his leadership, the NC State department set records in revenue growth, including a 327 percent increase in women’s basketball and 15 percent in men’s basketball. He also oversaw the school’s multimedia rights partnership with Learfield and led NIL efforts, creating a dedicated NIL position and student-athlete programming.
Hargis began his athletics career at NC State in 2004, later holding roles at USF before returning to NC State for a second stint. He has a bachelor’s degree from Wingate University and a master’s from NC State.
The Sanibel-Captiva Rotary meets at the Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way, and also via Zoom. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., and the meeting begins at 8:00 a.m. For more information about Rotary, visit sanibelrotary.org.
