Rotary Club Speaker Helps Caregivers of Dementia Patients

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

Daniel Moser speaks to Rotary Club about working with caregivers of dementia patients.

This past week, the Sanibel Captiva Rotary Club hosted Daniel Moser, a social worker whose career once centered around bicycle and pedestrian safety access and political advocacy.

For over 30 years, in that capacity, he worked for the Lee County Health Department, consulting with Lee County EMS, Lee Health Florida Bicycle Association, and other groups. He’s now using his social worker background to help caregivers of those with dementia.

Beginning in 2006, Maria, Moser’s wife, who was a speech therapist in private practice, started showing signs of a cognitive disorder. But even with the attempts to determine the cause, it wasn’t until 2015 that Maria was finally diagnosed by the Mayo Clinic with frontotemporal dementia.

The nine-year timeline to get the FTD diagnosis highlights one of the upfront problems with this type of dementia and the problems that their caregivers face.

Moser has volunteered with the Association of Frontotemporal Degeneration since 2016 and has also been on the Board of the Dubin Center since Maria’s passing in 2023, facilitating support groups and doing outreach.

The Sanibel-Captiva Rotary meets at the Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way, and on Zoom. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., the meeting begins at 8:00 a.m. For more information about Rotary, please visit sanibelrotary.org
