Johnson has been a working artist most of his life. First as a professional photographer and now as a fine art painter. He is an award-winning watercolor painter who does most paintings on location. Plein air painting is direct and does not allow for fussiness which suits his style.
He is a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society. His work is in collections throughout the country. His paintings can be seen in several galleries in southwest Florida.
He enjoyed a 40-year career as a product designer/executive in Richardson/Smith Design, Columbus, Ohio; RCA Consumer Electronics, Indianapolis, Ind. and Montell Polyolefins, Wilmington, Del. He and his wife, Marcia Andrews, retired to North Captiva in 1997 and lived there year-round for 17 years.
Tompkins is a member of the Shell Point Painters Guild and the Sanibel-Captiva Art League.
