Sanibel Beach Renourishment & Recovery Project Topic of Next FISH Friendly Faces Luncheon

Trucks hauled 400,000 tons of sand to Sanibel’s beaches from December 2023 through April 2024. After cumulative impacts of tropical systems in the summer 2024, the project has increased from the remaining 75,000 tons of sand to approximately 105,000 tons. SC file photo

FISH OF SANCAP invites the community to its Friendly Faces Luncheon at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel Captiva Rd., with a virtual option offered. Two City of Sanibel representatives are the featured speakers.

“We are so excited to welcome our guest speakers from the city and expect this luncheon to be very well attended,” said FISH Senior Services Director Erika Broyles, who facilitates the monthly event. “Remember to register early.”

The City of Sanibel’s Natural Resources Director Holly Milbrandt and Public Information Officer Eric Jackson will discuss the monumental beach renourishment and recovery project that replenished 400,000 tons of sand on the city’s beaches.

The purpose, scope, and plans of the project will be explained, as will the ongoing effort to build the island’s coastal resiliency. The presentation will also highlight the restoration of Sanibel’s most famous landmark, the Sanibel Lighthouse.

According to the city’s website, ‘Hurricane Ian’s landfall on Sanibel flattened the island’s beach and dune areas. As the storm surge from Ian receded, significant erosion occurred, creating channeled gullies along Sanibel’s coastline, brought to the island by approximately 120-160 trucks hauling two to three loads of sand each day.

“The City of Sanibel’s beach renourishment project was a substantial undertaking generating great interest since Ian,” said Broyles. “It’s been covered by FOX and NBC news stations and various newspaper publications and has been the topic of conversation among many. We’re excited to learn how the project was accomplished and what the future holds. You don’t want to miss our July Friendly Faces gathering.”

Reservations and meal choices must be sent to Broyles by Friday, July 5, at erika@fishofsancap.org or 239-472-4775. Zoom instructions for those joining virtually will be provided with the RSVP. Meal delivery is not available for virtual participants.

Sanibel Deli will provide complimentary lunch to all guests, and FISH will offer top-rated group games and giveaways.
